Biography
Wang Ningde was born in 1972 in Kuandian County, Liaoning Province, a Manchu Autonomous Region of China bordering North Korea. He originally intended to become a painter, but instead studied photography at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, established (originally, as Lu Xun Art College) in Yan’an in 1938 before moving to its current location in Shenyang in 1946. Wang graduated in 1995, and then moved south, to Guangdong Province. After working as a photojournalist in Guangzhou for a decade, he returned north to live and work in Beijing, developing a significant body of work investigating memory and dreams. Wang Ningde’s work has been exhibited in group and solo shows in China, the USA, Europe, the UK and Japan. In particular, his Some Days series, exploring the difficulties of reconciling past and present in today’s China, was internationally acclaimed.
