Biography
Born in Hong Kong in 1961, Leung Mee Ping studied in Paris at l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts between 1987 and 1991, and as an exchange student in Barcelona in 1992, later graduating with a master’s degree from the California Institute of the Arts in 2000. Returning to Hong Kong, Leung completed a doctoral dissertation in Cultural Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is now an Associate Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. Her use of collected human hair from over 100 nationalities to fabricate more than 10,000 children’s’ shoes for the installation ‘Memorize the Future’ (1998-2002) brought her to international attention as an artist who transcends boundaries of national identity. Her research-based practice integrates elements of performance, design and social space to reflect on issues of visual culture and globalisation.
