Optical Trick reproduces the essence of visual gadgets from an earlier era
The idea for these works came from optical toys and the earliest experiments in the moving image. Tu Wei-Cheng says, ‘Through a tiny pinhole, everyday life could be seen. This is what fascinated people then and this is what fascinates me now. The ten parts of my artwork point to the origin of animation. I have placed my fake relics in a museum setting because I want viewers to think about the people and events of the past and to value the clever inventions of long ago.’
