Play 201301 (2013) resembles an elaborate Gothic cathedral made of black leather and BDSM accessories, suspended from the ceiling by ropes. Xu Zhen suggests that sex and religion are equally dependent upon the human capacity for imagination and the desire for transcendence. Sex, religion and art each represent forms of catharsis, says the artist.
