Jiao Xingtao takes the most mundane objects from everyday life and transforms them. He became particularly interested in packaging, which he has described as ‘clothing for objects, like costumes for performers’, recognising both its quotidian ubiquity and also its symbolic and transformative properties. This chewing gum wrapper for a giant took shape as the artist was struggling to lose his addiction to smoking, relying on daily consumption of chewing gum to manage his nicotine cravings. Crumpled in a ball, Green Diary draws attention to something so ordinary that we barely notice it.
