Notes
Lolita Shang (real name Chang Shao-Chen) worked as a children’s illustrator, a fashion stylist and magazine editor, a jewellery designer, and even created a line of dolls before she started to exhibit her paintings in 2012. The doll-like face of her subject in this work is evidently influenced by the Japanese popular ‘cuteness culture’ of kawaii, seen in manga illustration and in product lines such as ‘Hello Kitty’. In ‘La Jalousie’ her subject, elaborately ringleted with a fur slung over one shoulder, pouts under a parasol patterned with butterflies. In the background, an idyllic landscape complete with a classical rotunda beside a lake completes the scene.
