The Under Heaven series questions the very act of painting. Impasto swirls and sculptural whorls of paint are applied like elaborate frosting on a cake. Under Heaven 20121018 (2012) is a candy pink confection so lovely that it denies its assembly-line means of production. These paintings reference the Chinese words ‘tian xia’, meaning ‘the whole world’, but they are also a sly reference to Jeff Koons’ notorious ‘Made in Heaven’ series, that graphically depicted sexual encounters with his then wife, the Italian porn star and politician ‘La Cicciolina’.
