Notes
The Static Eternity (2012) is a full-scale replica of Gao Rong’s childhood home, her grandparents’ tiny traditional house in Inner Mongolia, long since demolished. In her simulacrum of a simple dwelling, every single element, from the ‘kang’ bed with its flowered quilts to the rust-stained pipes, stove, enamel mugs and thermos flask — even the walls and doors — is embroidered padded fabric. To make the work as accurate as possible, Gao visited relatives and neighbours living in similar houses to take measurements and make drawings. She found plans, gathered old photographs, and interviewed older people in the village. Careful research and meticulous planning precedes each new project. Gao Rong sought advice from plumbers, carpenters, electricians and other experts, but the fabric construction and sewing was largely completed by the artist herself, assisted by her mother and by rural women to whom she has taught the embroidery techniques. A true labour of love, Gao Rong’s recreation of this vanished home speaks of the enduring bonds of family and memory.
