With their reflective, iridescent surface, He Jia’s group of ‘happy balloon men’ recall a rainbow slick of oil on a puddle of rainwater. This disquieting juxtaposition of the simply joyous with something darker and more disturbing is exactly what the artist intends. He blends influences from cartoons, advertising and American Pop Art to produce engaging works that reflect the booming Chinese economy of the early 2000s, a period of rapid social change and the incorporation of influences from outside China into every aspect of life, from fast food and fashion to art and music.
