Notes
Shyu’s works are a conversation with nature and a meditation on loss. ‘We focus too much on development, we have lost respect for the environment and we don’t care how we damage it…’ he says. ‘I am not trying to challenge or argue, I am trying to express my feelings by showing my memories of the past.’ Travellers’ Wings (2011) is once again a response to the artist’s memories, this time from student days in France. Thin copper ‘wings’ on long, thin rods flap gently, each printed with one of the French SNCF train tickets Shyu collected on his travels. The sound of their mechanical flapping evokes the train’s rhythmical clatter, and Shyu likens the railway tickets to a bird’s wings, a symbol of the freedom to travel and experience the world.
