Notes
A Keyframe in the language of animation is a drawing or image that captures the start or endpoint of a movement, or a colour or shape change. Chen began to develop this series in 2010, focusing on the SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon, which she had been enjoying for its absurd, jittery surrealism and humour. She juxtaposed the abstract representations in concentric rings of colour that she had already developed with backgrounds that employ the more familiar visual language of perspective to create illusions of depth and distance. We are left wondering what is real, and what is not, and how much visual information is necessary for us to recognise a subject or character – although children visiting the gallery in Taipei when these were exhibited immediately recognised the characters and exclaimed ‘Sponge Bob!’
