Drugs, Poisons, Good Living and the General Secretary (2011) depicts the two faces in profile are quickly drawn outlines in bright green paint, applied against a background of unmixed blue, exuberantly applied with large brushstrokes. The work references propaganda posters that exhort citizens not to smoke, for example, or to live in neighbourly harmony. Liao Guohe works with acrylic paint, often on unstretched raw canvas, deliberately employing cheap materials. The paintings are filled with unconstrained energy, an unnerving wildness, and a deliberate disdain for beauty.
