The social sphere of ‘The Complexing Body’ series is an almost obsolete space – a local market. Standing motionless within the space, a disjunctive presence, Hou further underlines the strange dissociative reality/unreality with the insertion of imagery from western art history. Another insertion into the space is the punctures and piercings of Hou’s embroidery needle as she embroiders around her own body and adds elements that are familiar from a western canon but utterly incomprehensible in the photographed Taiwanese location.
