Notes
Part of a continuing series of apparently ‘living’ inanimate objects, Breathe – ATM brings an ordinary, utilitarian cash machine, of the kind found on every street corner, to disturbing life. Wang is interested in juxtaposing aspects of modernity with Chinese tradition, and most particularly in Daoist notions of qi, which may be translated as ‘breath’, but more accurately means ‘life force’. His ATM inhales and exhales, its rubbery sides and screen bulge as it expands, and then deflate as it contracts.
