Notes
The magic of projected light transforms a simple piece of wire mesh into a shadowy landscape of shifting clouds and mountains. The grainy image that appears on the wall recalls Song Dynasty ink painting, with its subtle gradations of dark and light – a magic lantern show becomes a shan shui scroll. As the lens of Wu Chi-Tsung’s projector moves backward and forward its changing focal length brings the wire into sharper or more diffused focus on the wall. Sometimes we imagine we see a landscape glimpsed through a moon window in a Chinese garden, and at other times the image suggests a mountain range, reflections on water, or a bank of clouds. The artist says his fictional sense of distance ‘changes our way of looking at the world and reconstructs out perception of reality’.
