Wu Junyong’s animation of shadow puppets features his recurring image of the man wearing a dunce’s cap, or with a hollow head containing a bunch of flags. Like animated paper cuts they ride giant birds and spiders, or engage in pointless labour, rolling rocks like Sisyphus, chopping down the pedestal on which they stand, pushing over trees, or chipping away at the arm of a giant statue (presumably a waving Mao). At the end, after a menagerie of animal silhouettes whirls through the sky like a tornado, the moon is eclipsed and the world is in darkness.
