Guo Fei applies his skill in trompe l’oeil realistic oil painting to the front panel of wooden boxes to create the illusion that we can see a secret world in their interiors. Boxes, he says, are where we keep our most precious objects, and his own painted boxes with their mysterious sounds are receptacles for a lost world. The natural world of fields, ponds and rivers where he played as a child has been swallowed up by the ever-expanding city, and now remains only as a cherished but dream-like memory.
