Level 1/2, Unit 8, Building 5, Hua Jiadi, North Village (2010) is an astonishingly exact simulacrum of the entryway to the old-style Beijing apartment she rented as a student. With its rust-stained pipes, battered electricity fuse box, metal security door framed by red New Year calligraphy couplets, stencilled advertisements – even a muddy footprint where someone has been leaning on the wall – it is so lifelike that audiences are astonished by this feat of trompe l’oeil. The intention is not to trick or deceive, however, but rather to make us look anew at the ordinary, to see our world with fresh eyes.
