Notes
Song Dynasty painters created their expressive shan shui landscapes of mist-wreathed mountain peaks using deft strokes of Chinese ink and subtle washes to create the impression of rocky outcrops, twisted fir trees or waterfalls tumbling into eddying pools. Huang Zhen, instead, has ‘knitted’ his mountains using wire. Like the Song Dynasty masters whose work he has studied, Huang Zhen’s work is grounded in Daoist philosophy, which stresses the harmonious connection between everything in the universe. He uses wire, he says, because it is so readily available, but in his hands this everyday material is transformed into complex structures that echo the fantastical shapes of the Wuyi Mountains in his home province of Fujian.
