Notes
Self-taught artist Li Jianfeng describes his painting style as ‘super magic reality’. He creates bizarre, mysterious narratives featuring juxtapositions of figures, animals and objects in strange landscape settings. Here, for example, we encounter a bewigged 18th century gentleman in a surprisingly modern shirt and tie, and a sprawling man who appears to be masturbating amid vignettes of death, dismemberment and destruction. Influenced by the work of the German Expressionists and Neo-Expressionists, as well as Neo Rauch and the Leipzig School, his paintings evoke a chaotic and cruel world in which all is definitely not well. They appear to be allegories, perhaps even political commentaries, but the artist intends their meaning to be opaque.
