At first a seemingly ‘cute’ image, influenced by Japanese illustration and manga, on closer inspection Chen Fei’s lipsticked blob-like creature opening its sliced abdomen to reveal gory, glistening viscera is grotesque and disturbing. Rather than internal organs, this creature is filled to overflowing with the shiny baubles of consumer desire, including jewels, lipstick and a gold jin yuan bao – an ancient form of currency and now a symbol of prosperity. Chen Fei paints creatures that appear as infantile mounds of baby-pink flesh against lolly-pink backgrounds; like infants wailing to be fed, these creatures are filled with desires that can never truly be satiated.
