Notes
Equally fascinated by 1970s psychedelia and the Chinese intellectual’s aesthetic appreciation of bamboo, Feng Yan has managed to meld these unlikely twinned influences in a series of conceptual photographs that explore pure colour. Created in an experimental process, shooting the effects of wall-mounted neon lights and printing the results on fine art paper, these works are more like ‘painting with a camera’ than traditional photography says the artist, who has always been interested in minimalism. Here the vivid stripes recall the period of American post-war abstraction and the works of artists such as Barnett Newman and Morris Louis.
