Notes
Jing Zhiyong’s cartoon-like paintings suggest a childlike innocence, but a closer look reveals a sly and satirical twist. His scribbly line and blocks of colour refer to graffiti and to children’s drawings, but his themes are drawn from from media stories of the travails of modern life, from sexual power dynamics and forbidden desire in ‘Where Can I Touch’ to urban crime in ‘Fighting with Gangsters’. The possibility of violence lurks around every corner, in stark contrast to the whimsical style.
