Persian carpets signify many things – Middle Eastern history, culture, opulence and trade are all embodied in their intricate designs. Plywood, on the other hand, is a humble, utilitarian, affordable material. By making an inlaid ‘carpet’ from plywood Xu Zhen® juxtaposes high and low culture in a witty metaphor that questions global cultural consumption.
