Notes
Positioned somewhere between figuration and pure abstraction, never quite settling on a fixed painterly language – and always deliberately leaving us guessing – Zheng Haozhong’s paintings are playful explorations of the possibilities of colour, line and mark. He says his hero is Cézanne, and in this work it seems that he too, like the French Post-Impressionist, is pushing the act of painting to its very limits. Yet there are always references to the external world of the landscape, the town and the studio, and to Zheng’s internal psychological world, which for an artist includes the world of art history.
