Notes
‘Foresight’ is a series of works that reveals Jiang Pengyi’s characteristically experimental and innovative approach to pushing the conventional boundaries of the photographic medium. For the exhibition of this series in 2017, ShanghART Gallery described his insistence on the materiality of film and the possibilities of light with the term, ‘de-meditation’: ‘Trying to get rid of external limitations including cameras, lenses and shooting techniques, as well as subjective identity as an artist or photographer (producer), he retains only negatives, objects, time, and extremely limited, uncertain human intervention.’ Jiang loves the accidental and unforeseen possibilities of light-sensitive film, paper and chemical changes. For this series he placed organic matter including tofu, cucumber (as in this work), fruits and vegetables onto colour film in order to create unpredictable negative images. When the film is developed and printed in the darkroom, the resulting colours and unexpected compositions are like abstract paintings.
