Li Yousong animates his coloured chalk paintings to narrate a fictional story of Aihua, the leading performer of the Chinese Acrobatics troupe, who escapes from a kidnapping and overcomes many difficulties to return to the troupe. The legendary story happened in 1972 in Manhattan, which was also when Li Yousong’s father travelled to the United States as the band conductor of the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe. Intertwining the imaginative story and historical elements of the Chinese ‘Acrobatic Diplomacy’ in the 1970s, Li restores his childhood memory of imagined scenes in Manhattan and New York based on his father’s descriptions with a storytelling genre.
