Notes
Based on historical stories of the encounter between a Chinese magician, Ching Ling Foo, and his American imposter, Chung Ling Soo, Conjuring in San Francisco 2017 series represents the meeting of traditional Chinese folk art and the overseas Chinese community on the west coast of America in the early 20th century. The painting depicts a busy performing stage at the World’s Fair in San Francisco, where magicians and acrobats from the Orient are battling with each other, showcasing their fascinating magic tricks, exotic animals and marvellous acrobatic performances. Incorporating historical figures and events into an imaginary narrative, Li Yousong examines cultural conflicts and integration triggered by the process of modernization.
