Notes
A tall pillar of red glass references the memorial stele found in Xi’an, ancient, upright stone slabs engraved with inscriptions. For Liu Jianhua the form of the stele is both cultural and personal; each individual can imagine into his glass column their own dreams and memories. The vivid red colour has spiritual significance, representing power and strength. Liu Jianhua sees glass as very similar to his usual material of porcelain – both are very fragile, both materials have an ancient art and craft lineage, and both are related to nature and temperature. Liu says he uses traditional techniques such as glass and porcelain to break away from stereotypical thinking and find new possibilities for contemporary art.
