Notes
Conceptual artist Cang Xin’s works are produced by hired, highly skilled artists and artisans to his specifications – they give physical form to his visions. Cang’s works emerge from his spiritual beliefs, which combine Mongolian shamanism, animism and Tantric Buddhism. He sees art and life as an endless, fluxing cycle of ‘sacrifice, mutation and regeneration’. Here, the artist depicts himself, seated cross-legged and surrounded by tiny versions of himself in different, absurd physical actions. He has become a devouring monster, feeding on versions of himself. This gruesome image recalls, quite intentionally, Goya’s c.1819-23 painting, ‘Saturn Devouring His Son’.
