Notes
Yanyan Huang sometimes describes herself as a ‘history painter’ by which she means that her work is infused with her own hybrid identity as a Chinese, American-trained artist who lives mostly in New York but whose dream is to live on the Mediterranean. She is influenced by western traditions of abstract painting, and there are discernible hints of the ‘soak and stain’ canvases of Helen Frankenthaler in the play of intersecting opaque brush marks and swirling translucent washes in her canvases. Her work is also inevitably inflected by her knowledge of Chinese calligraphy and of xie yi ink and brush painting.
