Notes
The Forgotten Palace series 2016 consists of multiple small fragments of old architecture dating from the 1970s and 1980s in China. Made from concrete combined with pieces of wood, iron or glass, each piece of sculpture possesses a vintage, mottled texture. Inspired by memories specific to a time and place – Wu’s rural hometown and his childhood – he creates a uniquely nostalgic sculptural and material language yet speaks to a more universal misgiving. What has been lost and forgotten in the trajectory of urbanisation? He is interested in photographs by Robert Polidori, marvelling at the humanist emotion revealed in those variegated streetscapes. He is also fascinated by Filip Dujardin’s work, believing that the implausible distortion of the architecture implies an alienated experience of living in a rapid developing modern society. For The Forgotten Palace series, Wu Yue said that he wants to restore the solemn and quiet atmosphere around the old buildings from his memory and preserve these fast-vanishing cultural sites as monuments.
