Notes
When Bu Hua returned to the creation of still images – paintings and giclée prints combining her early training in painting and printmaking with her new knowledge of the possibilities of digital media - she produced works that reveal her confident ability to merge genres and styles. Owing something to the flat decorative patterns of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, something to 1980s cartoons, and something to Chinese folk art, Bu Hua has merged these eclectic references to create a visual language entirely her own. Past, present and future collide in the imagined adventures of this 'Beijing babe' who functions as a voyeur, a means by which we can see the craziness of the contemporary world. Maybe it’s a post-apocalyptic world, or maybe just a dream.
