By 2015 Ma Qiusha had decided that she could make videos using found footage rather than shooting her own. ‘Mars’ is constructed from abandoned footage of desert landscapes commissioned for documentaries by television stations. She was thinking about the future of humanity, about whether the human race could survive elsewhere, given our technological capabilities and creativity, and decided that Mars was a place strange enough and far away enough to seem at once possible and impossible. ‘Mars’, she says, is about the future, ‘totally beyond history and beyond today’s reality.’
