As Soon as China has a Space Station on the Moon it can Begin to Consider Establishing a Communist Party There No. 3 (2008) reveals the sardonic humour that lies beneath the visually seductive saturated colour of Bu Hua’s invented world. Her Young Pioneer, arms folded, stands naked on a monstrous mechanical beast, a ‘transformer’ toy gone rogue. In the foreground, a naked woman flees in panic from predatory animals. A black sky is filled with giant dragonflies and beetles. The humour in Bu Hua’s work belies the seriousness of her disenchantment with the world that her generation have inherited: the air is not safe to breathe, and one cannot trust the safety of the food grown in contaminated soil, but the political grandstanding continues.
