Cat is a charming and whimsical five-minute narrative about the love between a cat and her kitten. But there is a savage subtext here too. When the cat is murdered by gangsters, the tiny kitten bravely follows his mother into the underworld to try to bring her back to life. It’s a dark story, expressed with Bu Hua’s characteristic sureness. Each frame of Cat is painterly, reminiscent of German Expressionist woodcuts in its emotive intensity.
