Notes
Celebrated performance and conceptual artist Cang Xin is fascinated by rituals of all kinds, and his work is particularly influenced by Mongolian shamanism and the animism practised by his mother. He sees connections across cultures, between peoples and even between species – Cang says that art and life are in an endless, fluxing cycle of ‘sacrifice, mutation and regeneration’. In this work, a group of Africans sit in a circle. In the centre, a man with his head buried in the ground is transforming into a tree. Cang Xin believes that every living thing has a soul: “One creature can transform into another. We are meat but also spiritual.”
