Notes
Merging the ancient tradition of ink painting with stop-motion animation techinques, Liu Yi produces hundreds of delicate ink and wash drawings to make up her surreal and evocative video installations. The process is slow and painstaking, requiring patience and practised control of the ink medium. Liu has been fascinated by ink since she was a small child and watched ink-wash seeping into fibrous xuan paper. She is especially interested in the history of animation and art cinema in China, and there is a hint at the deft ink-wash paintings created by the animation masters at the Shanghai Film Studios in the 1960s.The idea for ‘Chaos Theory’ came from the random jumble of images and events that inhabit our dreams, from erotic fantasies to childhood memories, and from nightmares to scenes of nature and ambiguous abstractions. Liu Yi says dreams are like order within chaos, and chaos with order, all fused into one system.
