Be the You in the Mirror (2016) conveys Zhou Xiaohu’s interest in truth and fakery. Stainless steel surgical instruments are suspended between a light and an opaque panel; their cast shadows appear to form Chinese calligraphy. With its suggestion of surgically enhanced beauty, and its illusory calligraphy, this work reveals the insubstantial nature of the apparently real.
