Notes
Dong Wensheng has also drawn on mountain and water imagery, so significant in the Chinese landscape tradition. In a series shot at Duanmu, notable as the birthplace of Zi Gong, a famous Confucian disciple, he has created lyrical black and white landscapes traversed by lines of light. Shot in black and white with a large-format camera, using long exposure times at nightfall, they recall the famous ‘Water Album’ of Southern Song Dynasty painter, Ma Yuan. Dong’s ‘light painting’ references Ma Yuan’s use of ink and brush to ‘map’ the patterns made by wind and water.
