Notes
Dong Wensheng has also drawn on mountain and water imagery, so significant in the Chinese landscape tradition. In a series shot at Duanmu, notable as the birthplace of Zi Gong, a famous Confucian disciple, he has created lyrical black and white landscapes traversed by lines of light. Shot in black and white with a large-format camera, using long exposure times at nightfall, they recall the famous ‘Water Album’ of Southern Song Dynasty painter, Ma Yuan. Men Waiting for the Wind (2010) shows the backs of ten men standing motionless on a headland, looking across a body of water towards a mountain shrouded in mist.
