Notes
Liu Yujia loves the beach, but not the usual holiday landscape of pleasure-seeking tourists, splashing children and palm trees. Instead, she scoured video archives to find aerial footage of rolling waves breaking against almost deserted shores. The shoreline mediates a boundary between the land and the raw, untamed power of the sea. Liu is interested in the idea of the beach as a zone of transition, an in-between place where anything is possible. What does it signify? The beach is a place of hedonism, certainly, but also a site of invasion, of maritime trade, and the arrival point for refugees seeking asylum. It is also a reminder of the power of nature. Wave is hypnotically beautiful. Tiny figures, as if seen from the perspective of a flying seagull, cast long shadows on the sand, and we are reminded of our insignificance in the vastness of the universe.
