In Left (2014-17), a monumental work almost nine metres across, we see Tang Song’s reference to ink painting in the almost unrelieved blackness of the canvas, as well as references to High Modernist abstraction. He has applied layer over layer of oil paint over a long period of time, scoring and scraping the surface and cutting into the paint before re-painting, sanding and painting again. Tang’s layers of scarred paint resemble an unreadable text, like something unearthed from a past civilisation.
