Zhu Changquan suspects that the modern world is turning us all into ‘heads without brains’, mindlessly seeking ‘likes’ on social media and vanishing down wormholes of Youtube watching, Netflix bingeing, and celebrity gossip-mongering. His fairy-tale forest glades are digitally constructed imagined landscapes, miniature virtual worlds created with 3D software and brought to vivid, backlit life. Today, we move easily between our real and non-real worlds. Zhu wants to create immersive ‘fake’ environments that feel very real. He asks: Can we tell the difference – and does it matter?
