The shadowy subjects depicted in Huang Xiaoliang’s Walking – Boy (2016) and Walking – Man (2016) take part in generic, even banal, activities. Focusing on everyday scenes, Huang seeks to demonstrate the commonalities in human habits and activities. Walking – Boy and Walking – Man represent a shift in the artist’s practice from photography to moving images; projecting animated shadows of familiar scenes, Huang’s animations create a dynamic relationship between the projections and the gallery spaces in which they are shown.
