Notes
Window–Makeup (2016) recalls Hollywood Noir: we watch through a grid of windowpanes as a young woman, hair tied back, unscrews the lid from a cosmetics jar. The frisson of voyeurism is unmistakeable, and a little disturbing, even though it seems we are watching a scene from the past. As in Hitchcock’s Rear Window there is a sense that the watcher is about to see something more sinister unfold. There is always tension: Huang Xiaoliang uses the language of film and photography to suspend his subjects and landscapes, somewhere between a nostalgic dream of a lost ‘floating world’ and an anxious fear of the uncanny.
