Tang’s imagined world is populated with his imaginary new ‘ecotypes’ – fantastical biological phenomena that might be monstrously enlarged microbes, or they might be miniature 3D models of beings of who knows what size from the farthest reaches of the universe. Each one appears almost familiar and recognisable – but then we see it is unlike anything that exists in our world. The effect is disquieting. Arrayed in rows across a white canvas like scientific insect specimens, Tang’s invented creatures invite us to reconsider what is real.
