Notes
Tomography refers to imaging by cross-sections or sectioning, through the use of any kind of penetrating wave like an X-ray or ultrasound. The method is used in areas of science such as radiology, archaeology, biology, atmospheric science, geophysics, oceanography, plasma physics, materials science, astrophysics, and quantum information. Hsu Chiao-Yen has deconstructed or sectioned particular physical spaces, including his own room and, in this instance, what appears to be a utilitarian space resembling a shed or garage. Its surfaces have been recorded using charcoal before it is pulled open and spreads from wall to floor. He says that he wants to record memories and traces before they disappear, and the rubbed appearance of the charcoal over the surface recalls the appearance of a negative, or an X-ray – something a little ghostly and ephemeral.
