The ‘China Carnival’ series represents China as a gigantic fun park – or a shopping mall – expressing the exuberance and optimism of a younger generation who grew up after the chaos and anguish of the Cultural Revolution. Most of the images are painstakingly assembled tableaux of hundreds of doppelgangers interacting against an imagined backdrop of a simulated, synthesised reality. Although the atmosphere of the works seems celebratory, there is a darker underlying sense of society as a sinister carnival where the fun might come to an unpredictable and sudden end.
