Notes
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging series, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging – Everybody Loves and Magnetic Resonance Imaging – Club (both 2014), extends Zheng Guogu’s mash-up of throw-away texts from consumer culture with Buddhist notions of energy and connectedness. These blurred images convey an altered, hallucinatory psychological state, perhaps a reference to the heightened awareness achieved by chemical means, or perhaps merely attributable to the dizzying effects of the modern world. This series, and Zheng’s dazzling appropriations of Tibetan thangka paintings, evoke a world where the spiritual is as easily consumed, and as easily discarded, as the material: the artist calls it a ‘global game’ in which all humanity participates.
